Welcome to Unique Upholstery & Design’s Inaugural Edition!
My name is Joe Paul and welcome to Unique Upholstery & Design’s Inaugural Edition!
My hope is to educate, entertain and provide some insights into the upholstery trade and industry. I don’t claim to be a master by any means despite what my mother tells everybody.
I do like to do my best on every project that comes my way and I’m always amazed and grateful that folks would choose to spend their hard earned cash on my services… Much appreciated.
Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of building and upholstering some unique projects. It has always bothered me that I didn’t take the time to put the information into a book or guide for others to use and build upon.
Well, now that’s changed. The tools are available now to do just that.
I have a lot of data I’ve scribbled, jotted, and scrawled down that I’ll draw upon to illustrate some of the projects I’ve encountered. Hopefully some of this stuff helps you to complete your own projects.
In this picture we’ve built a football headboard for a commercial client. I sketched a rough design and adjusted my measurements to work with proportions the client specified.
The oval shape was cut from 3/4” plywood. The outside edge of the headboard had a 2” lip glued and screwed to it for stability, and for stapling cover fabric to.
We used 2” foam padding overall with an inside layer of 1” to give a roundish cross section. The outside edges were skimmed and glued down to finish the edges.
A brown Naugahyde vinyl covers the body with white vinyl overlaid and topstitched. It took a bit of fussing to get it right but the result can be seen here.
The lack of corners made it a bit awkward to handle (my assistant’s legs showing).
Fastening a cleat to the backside of the headboard made it easy to mount. A matching set was installed on the wall.Tags: headboard
